I’m always looking for ways to save both my family and my clients money. Here’s a novel idea I just came across while doing some research. You can save about $30.00-$40.00 per year if you simply shut your hot water heater off from the hours of 10:00pm until 6:00am. Think about it, you’re probably sleeping during those hours (if you’re part of the “establishment”). If you’re under the age of 35, you may want to up the night time hours a bit because you’re probably out having fun!
Anyway, I digress. See, here’s how it works: Unless your home has an on-demand hot water system (and it probably doesn’t) you most likely have a 30-50 gallon water tank that heats the water to about 120 degrees which is pumped to your shower, washing machine, kitchen or bathroom sinks. Well, when the water in the tank goes below 120 degrees, the heater senses this and kicks on to bring the water back up to temp. While you may actually need this happening during the day, why on earth would you need your water heated when you are asleep? So, how would I shut off the water heater when I’m asleep? you may ask – here’s how in a nutshell. If you shut the hot water down from 10:00pm until 6:00am, you will still have enough hot water in the tank for an evening shower and the tank won’t be reheating the water all night long while you sleep.
You can make this happen in several different ways:
1) If you have an electric water heater, just replace the cut-off wall switch with a timer that can turn the unit on and off automatically.
2) Get a digital timer switch that’s a seven-day programmable unit and have your handyman install it in place of your existing switch.
3) There’s yet an easier way. Purchase a Utilitech Digital Timer or AutoChron Wireless Programmable Wall Switch Timer. Both are battery powered timers. Simply remove the wall switch and replace it with the Ulititech or AutoChron switch.
4) If there isn’t a wall switch installed, an electrician or handyman can install one for you. If you don’t have a technician you trust, reach out to us – we have an extensive list of trusted service providers. Call us at 703-980-0243!
5) If you have a gas or propane powered heater, your only choice will be a gas water heater timer from American Pacific.
